Maya Society of Minnesota Tour 2023: Guatemala off the Beaten Track
February 28 – March 13, 2023
The Maya Society of Minnesota’s 2023 tour returns to Guatemala for a two-week exploration of hidden treasures – from searching for the emblematic quetzal to trekking through sites known only to the archaeologists.
The tour begins in Guatemala City where we will visit the Miraflores Museum, Kaminaljuyu, the National Museum, and the Popol Vuh museum. The next day we begin our quest with a visit to the Biotopo Quetzal sanctuary and the Orquigonia Orchid Sanctuary. From there, we continue toward the Peten where we will visit Maya archaeological sites that span the settlement of the lowland Mayan area from the Preclassic through the Terminal Classic periods. We will travel to these remote sites in 4×4 pickup trucks – hoping that the rains have stopped soon enough that we can make it through! Along the way, we will spend one night in remote Uaxactun and another in Tikal before starting our journey back to Guatemala City.
Join the crew as we strike off the beaten path to explore Guatemala’s magnificent Maya history at sites most people only get to visit in photos and magazines!
